The Etiquette of Repayment of Debts

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith in his Sahih. The Hadith is therefore authentic. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that a man was owed a debt by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), a camel of a particular age. The man came to claim what was due to him. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) told [the Sahabah radiyallahu ‘anhum]: “Give him [what he is owed].” They searched, but could not find a camel of the exact age. Instead, they found one that was older [and more valuable]. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Give it to him.” The man remarked: “You have given me more than my due. May Allah grant you more.” Thereupon, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Indeed, the best of you are those who are best in settling their debts [i.e. paying without delay or voluntarily paying the creditor more].” (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2305, 2393. ) Also see here And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
