The Sahabah’s (radiyallahu ‘anhum) Etiquette of Eating With Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. The complete Hadith is as follows: Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “When we were with Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) at a meal, we would not commence eating until Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) commenced. On one occasion, we were with him at a meal when a young girl came rushing forward as if she were being pushed, and she was about to place her hand in the food. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) took hold of her hand. Then a Bedouin came, as if he too was being pushed, and Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) took hold of his hand as well. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then said: “Shaytan considers food lawful when the name of Allah is not mentioned over it. He brought this girl so that he could make it lawful through her, so I took hold of her hand. Then he brought this Bedouin so that he could make it lawful through him, so I took hold of his hand.
